Géraud Portal New Quartet (FR/BE)

Géraud Portal (FR) - double bass, compositions / Plume (FR) - alto saxophone / Jean-Paul Estiévenart (BE) - trumpet / Antoine Pierre (BE) - drums

Géraud Portal, a musician with an atypical career, never ceases to surprise us. As a child, he tried his hand at electric bass for the first time as an autodidact. Later, as he divides his schedule between a lumberjack during the week and a jazz musician on the weekends, he gradually carved out a place for himself in the French artistic community. In 2012, he flew to New York where he will make multiple trips, the opportunity to polish his bop and take full eyes. From these experiences will be born his first album, "Fort Greene Story". Still in New York, he recorded his second opus, “Brothers” (2015), with Étienne Déconfin and Kush Abadey. In 2015, the double bass player moved to Paris. He then began to roam regularly the big clubs of the capital, in particular the Duc des Lombards, where he received a "carte blanche" to animate the jam sessions on Friday evening. This freedom allows him to discover many musicians, some of whom will participate in his current project, an album tribute to double bassist Charles Mingus. With this new quartet, Géraud Portal wishes to express an original music, without harmonic instrument, for a greater melodic and rhythmic communication between the musicians. For this fact, he has specially written new compositions dedicated to this formation and the musicians who compose it. He wishes to highlight the talents of Plume, very lyrical in his conception of improvisation, Jean Paul Estiévenart, fabulously unpredictable and Antoine Pierre whose groove is phenomenal.
