Sold Out - NΔBOU "Hubert"

Saint-Jazz Festival

Nabou Claerhout - trombone / Roeland Celis - guitar / Trui Amerlinck - double bass / Mathias Vercammen - drums

Trombonist Nabou Claerhout writes compositions that transport the audience through different musical genres: memories of her youth such as Michael Jackson, Beyonce or Erykah Badu, her brother’s opera collection or the records of her mother, Jacques Brel, Marco Borsato or Skunk Anansi. Later she is driven by new influences such as Maceo Parker, Avishai Cohen (bassist), Kirk Franklin, Corry Henry, Lionel Loueke, Mark Guiliana, ... Her compositions also reflect the various influences she received during her studies at Codarts in Rotterdam and at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Especially Kenny Wheeler has been an important source of inspiration for her compositions.

Nabou offers us a very personal sound with her instrument. Through all kinds of effects she often creates a dreamlike setting with melancholic connotations. Some compositions, however, are rhythmic and dynamic and radiate a captivating groove. In short, this first EP offers a nice illustration of what the quartet NΔBOU has in mind for us: a surprising trip with daring musical choices and a combination of strong musical personalities.
