Jazzpresso Ristretto IX

Illustrations crafted with coffee and black ink by Herb Cells

Screen culture and other priorities kept Herbert Celis (Herb Cells) from touching true subject matter such as watercolour paper, pen and ink since 2015! (To coffee, however, he has remained faithful all this time ...) Today, herb is very delighted to honour the tradition again replacing paint with coffee and India ink on paper with a technique similar to watercolours’.
In this ninth series of caffeinated caricatures & portraits, the "JazzPresso Ristretto" series, he gives shape to the impressions that jazz evokes in him. Often, the space seems too narrow for boundless ecstasy, creating a claustrophobic tension in the drawing.
Main topic in his newest works is the female (jazz) musician, still in the minority under the spotlight. During his triple exhibition, he addresses this phenomenon in his own way on paper.
One might recall his drawings from the 2015 festival’s edition.

A Hasselt originary, Herb has been drawing since the age of six, has a master degree in cartoon animation movies, and founded Naff label & management in 2012. He toured as a lyricist / guest mc with several bands. His current musical project goes by the name of @fokkop.era, a experimental hip hop live band, influenced by many genres.
