Jazz Portrait - Jazz et handicap
by Jean-Pol Schroeder
Whether it’s a question of racism, nationality or style, jazz has always shone through its respect for difference. This evening, we’ll be talking about a very special kind of difference, one that won’t leave you alone for the rest of your life : disability in all its forms. Time and again, jazz musicians affected by disability have transcended it through their music, sometimes generating new instrumental approaches that have set the standard. From Django Reinhardt to Michel Petrucciani, not forgetting Ray Charles, Tom Harrell, Tete Montoliu, Horace Parlan and many others, their music is a powerful reminder that difference can be a dazzling source of enrichment.
