International Jazz Day : Victor Da Costa & Bart Defoort Quartet + Sewing Machine
Double Bill
Victor Da Costa & Bart Defoort Quartet
Bart Defoort - tenor sax / Victor Da Costa - guitar / Jos Machtel - double bass / Jan De Haas - drums
Bart Defoort and Victor Da Costa have been playing together regularly for over 20 years. With this project, they offer us their own compositions as well as personal arrangements of a number of standards. Their music is lively, touching and energetic, with a reminiscence of the “hard-bop” era of the ’50s and ’60s, without getting bogged down in uninnovative nostalgia. Joined by Jos Machtel and Jan De Haas, two fantastic musicians with whom they have collaborated in many other projects, they create a beautiful band sound, where mutual listening and musical communication are crucial elements.

Born in Brussels in October 2021, the Sewing Machine group energetically interprets magnificent tunes by Duke Ellington, Johnny Hodges, Ben Webster, John Kirby, Count Basie, Clark Terry, Rex Stewart, Harry sweet Edison, Joe Newman, Coleman Hawkins and many others. Driven by true passion, they strive to recreate the atmosphere of Kansas City’s smoke-filled clubs, capturing both the power of swing and the musical light of the great masters of the era.
All band members share a common passion for swing from the ’30s and ’50s. They revive legendary albums, respecting the unique approach of legendary musicians. Their repertoire is inspired by a number of landmark albums, offering music that is both conducive to attentive listening and dance, especially lindy-hop.
