Balkavik Quartet
Victor Abel - piano, composition / Frédéric Gairard - violin / Romain Karsenty - accordion / Antoine Maes - double bass
BALKAVIK was born in 2021 from the unbridled imagination of Brussels-based pianist and composer Victor Abel - founder of the group “Ananké” twenty years earlier - and his three playing partners : Frédéric Gairard on violin, Romain Karsenty on accordion and Antoine Maes on double bass.
Inspired by Transylvanian, Moldavian and Bulgarian suites gleaned from their travels - but also by their varied influences (from jazz to funk, from swing to musette) - the quartet offers an energizing concentrate of instrumental music, between tenderness and virtuosity, tradition and crossbreeding. A dreamlike universe where Tim Burton and Émir Kusturica rub shoulders, frenetic dances and lame rhythms, strong alcohol and gentle madness... In March 2024, the group released its first 8-track album : “Fluture de Noapte” (Romanian for “moth”).
