Amaury Faye Piano Solo "Buran" (FR)

Amaury Faye (FR) - piano

“After two Golden Discs in trio (‘Clearway’, Jazz Village, 2017 and ‘Live in Brussels’, Hypnote Records, 2018), the French pianist from Brussels came back in his hometown to record his first disc in solo. A first attempt that sounds as a genius stroke, as we can see the maturity and outcome of the project. The maturity is here for sure, in his choice to mix in his personal compositions the historical ‘Temptation Rag’, a 1909’s theme immortalized by Sidney Bechet and put in another version by Wynton Marsalis, but also by Emile Parisien. Also a John Barry’s song for the eponym TV series (in French, ‘Amicalement vôtre’).

With all of this the pianist makes obviously his honey (grand cru!), but his musical identity takes place in his personal compositions, that seem made to illustrate the multiple faces of his talent. In the very interesting Pascal Anquetil’s interview that is in the booklet, he explains us how he freed himself from Brad Mehldau’s influence, which doesn’t stop him from evolving in those high environments. Very pianistic for sure, but also deeply musical: the taste of risk stimulates the creativity without chocking the achievements of a true music and jazz’s culture. A real success: I dared. Master stroke? I guess.”
